Neon assets can stay surprisingly low poly because glow carries attention. Small signs, pickups and UI props often need only 150 to 800 triangles. Vehicles, weapons and robots usually sit at 1,500 to 6,000, while a hero cyber scene can use 8,000 to 20,000 triangles across many objects. The danger is not triangle count; it is too many glowing surfaces competing for the eye.
The specific shader rule is emission isolation. Put neon lines, windows and symbols into a separate emissive mask channel or material slot, keep the base material dark and high roughness, then let post-process bloom do the glow. In Unity URP or Unreal, bloom responds to HDR emission values above 1.0; in Three.js, you often render emissive objects through an UnrealBloomPass layer so the whole scene does not wash out. This makes neon low poly distinct from generic sci-fi, which may use hard-surface shapes without actual bloom-managed emission.
Palette discipline is even stricter than in other styles. Pick one dominant glow color, one secondary accent and one warning color, such as cyan, magenta and amber, then reserve the brightest value for interactable elements. If every edge glows, nothing is readable. Keep emissive strips as geometry or mask islands with clean UVs so they survive compression and remain crisp in GLB exports.
Export GLB for WebGL and Three.js if you want compact neon scenes, but test bloom in the target renderer because emissive intensity is not always interpreted identically between engines. Use FBX for Unity and Unreal when you need named material slots for masks, sockets and animated lights.
