A static pasture horse or distant stable prop can read at 800 to 1,800 triangles. A rideable game horse should usually target 3,000 to 7,000 triangles so the shoulders, hips, hocks, mane and tail deform cleanly during walk, trot, canter and gallop cycles. A desktop hero mount with saddle, bridle and armor can use 10,000 to 18,000 triangles with LODs, but the horse body itself should stay efficient while tack and decorative straps take the extra budget.
Horse rigging is specific because its gaits are not just faster versions of one walk. Walk, trot, canter and gallop have different footfall patterns, so a mount-ready horse needs clean IK targets at all four hooves plus separate gait clips rather than one sped-up run. The front legs need shoulder and knee loops that preserve the high scapula motion, while the hind legs need a visible hock bend. If the hoof pivots are not placed at ground contact, the horse will appear to skate when turning or stopping.
Saddle support changes the model. Leave a slightly flatter, stable region behind the withers so a saddle can sit without clipping, and keep reins, bridle, saddle and stirrups as separate meshes parented to the head, spine and rider-hand targets. This lets an RPG reskin tack per faction without changing the horse body. Use a shared 1024px atlas for coat, mane, hooves and basic tack, then add optional 2048px detail only for close cinematic mounts.
Export FBX for Unity and Unreal when you need skeleton, IK-friendly bones and gait animation clips, or GLB for Godot, WebGL and AR. For 3D printing, a standing horse needs thicker legs than the realistic anatomy suggests, or a base connecting all four hooves to prevent snapping.
