A mobile pickup coin can be only 48 to 120 triangles: 16 to 24 sides around the rim, two flat faces and a tiny bevel so the edge catches light. A nicer desktop collectible usually sits between 180 and 500 triangles with an embossed icon and beveled rim. A hero treasure coin viewed in an inventory close-up can use 800 to 1,500 triangles, but most of that budget should go into the rim and symbol relief rather than increasing the circular side count past what the camera can resolve. For VR, keep thrown or physics coins simple, around 100 to 250 triangles, because many of them may be simulated at once.

The non-obvious coin detail is rotational symmetry and pivot. The origin must sit exactly at the coin center, with the local forward axis aligned through the coin face, so spin animations and shader rotations do not wobble. If the mesh is even slightly off-center, a spinning pickup looks broken immediately. Apply transforms after centering the coin, and keep the embossed symbol balanced around the center so it does not create a visual heavy side while rotating.

Embossed symbols should be real shallow geometry or a normal/height bake depending on distance. For a pickup seen from gameplay distance, a raised star or rune made from 20 to 80 extra triangles reads better than a texture-only mark under flat lighting. For hundreds of coins, bake the symbol into the shared atlas and keep only the beveled rim as geometry. Use a single gold material with a darker edge color or vertex-color gradient; separate face, rim and symbol materials create needless draw calls for a tiny object.

3D printing a coin reverses the priority: thickness matters more than polycount. A printable coin should be at least 2 to 3mm thick so it does not warp, with raised relief at least 0.4mm high for resin or 0.8mm for FDM if the symbol should be visible after printing. Print flat on the bed for the cleanest face detail, but add a tiny bevel to both sides so the edge is not sharp and the first layer does not mushroom outward visibly.
