A background battlefield tank or RTS unit can read at 900 to 2,000 triangles. A playable action-game tank usually needs 3,000 to 7,000 triangles so the hull, turret, barrel, hatches, road wheels and tracks remain distinct from a third-person camera. A hero boss tank or cinematic vehicle can use 10,000 to 18,000 triangles with LODs, but spend that budget on silhouette, turret detail and armor plates rather than dense bolts.

The key technical fact is the two-axis turret setup. The turret mesh needs its origin on the vertical rotation axis at the turret ring, while the cannon barrel needs a separate child pivot on the horizontal trunnion axis for elevation. If both motions share one origin, aiming will slide or arc incorrectly. Tracks are usually faked with a scrolling UV strip or shader on a simple belt mesh rather than individually animated track links, which is far cheaper and reads correctly in motion.

Collision should use a boxy hull collider plus a separate turret collider, never exact mesh collision. For gameplay hit zones, keep hull, turret, barrel and tracks as named separate meshes so armor values or damage states can differ by part. Use one 1024px atlas for armor, treads, markings and dirt, and make faction variants with decal regions or color swaps rather than new geometry.

Export FBX for Unity and Unreal when you need turret hierarchy, muzzle sockets and recoil animation, or GLB for Godot, WebGL strategy maps and AR previews. Put the muzzle socket at the barrel tip and keep the barrel hollow or darkened so firing VFX align.
